The "Age-Old" Debate About Age

You may have heard conversations like this before, I know I do with my generation.

Them: "I'm getting old, my back hurts every morning, and my knees hurt going up the stairs."

Me: "You're not even 40 yet."

Them: "You know I just can't do the things I used to, my body is breaking down."

Me: "Do you move around at all during the day?"

Them: "No, I sit for work and when I'm done work I sit more, but I expect my body to be as physically fit and pain-free as I was when I was actually using it."

Me: "I don't think your age is the problem here. "

Them: "No, it can't be helped, I'm just past the point of no return."

Your doctor and the people around you may have told you it's just your age and you should take it easy.

Do more stretching and "low-impact stuff" Stop lifting weights, it's too dangerous. Maybe do some Yoga instead, that seems safe.

These statements are infuriating to me. The idea that we become weak, fragile, and prone to injury as we age is a lie.

Age is often used as an excuse to avoid a simple truth.

The real reason you feel lousy is all those years of choosing not to prioritize your health.

And this means,

  • Strength training 2-4x per week

  • Eating nutritious foods

  • Getting quality sleep

  • Improving your mobility and active range of motion

  • Drinking plenty of water

  • Managing your stress

The good news is that it's never too late to turn it around, and it's pretty simple (but not always easy) in reality.

There is of course a natural decline in physical ability as we age but I've worked with enough clients in their 60s and 70s (that outperform those in their 20s and 30s) to know that you can continue to build strength and lean muscle mass at any age.

I've recently witnessed a client in their late 60s barbell squat their bodyweight for the first time in their life.

Your age isn't the problem, it's the choices you've been making. So CHOOSE to start training, moving, and taking care of yourself in general and you'll feel like a brand new person in just a few weeks.

No matter where you're starting from, you can get stronger, more durable, and live a higher quality of life.

To your good health,
